General Information:
Since taking Silk 11 years ago, Jean has concentrated her practice in the field of medical law.

As a Junior she had developed a considerable practice in clinical negligence, and she has been involved in numerous clinical negligence cases as a Silk. Many of these cases involve brain damaged children but she has also acted in cases involving other specialist areas of medicine such as neurosurgery and paediatric surgery. She works for both Claimants and Defendants, roughly on a 50:50 split, which she feels permits her to give balanced advice in all aspects of litigation.

She has chaired two large Government Inquiries, one regarding the treatment of a mental patient who had killed at random a member of the public, and the other into NHS quality and practice arising from the actions of a Consultant Gynaecologist. She has also chaired two major NHS internal disciplinary inquiries. She acts for doctors before the GMC and disciplinary tribunals, and as a past Chairman of Mental Health Review Tribunals has considerable knowledge of mental health law. Jean has appeared in the Privy Council for an appellant doctor against the General Medical Council.

She has been Head of Hailsham Chambers since January 2000.

Jean has two major strands to her practice. One is the field of clinical negligence where she acts for patients, Trusts, Health Authorities and doctors in cases where large sums in damages are claimed. Many such cases arise in respect of claimants who were brain damaged at birth. She has consistently been named as a leading SIlk in clinical negligence actions in both the Chambers Directory and the Legal 500. The second strand of her practice is in participating, whether as advocate or Chairman, in inquiries and tribunals of all typres in relation to doctors and their practices.

In addition jean has recently trained as a Mediator. She believes that her experience (i)in chairing both Government and private inquiries, (ii) in sitting as a Crown Court Judge in both criminal and civil jurisdictions, (iii)as a former judical member of the Mental Health Review Tribunals, (iv) as counsel in round table settlement discussions and (v)as Head of Chambers, gives her unique insight into the role of a mediator which wil help parties to resolve their difference amicably and without resort to litigation. Her experience in a wide range of medical disciplines will give her credibility in mediating all types of dispute in medical and medically related matters.
