Judicial History:
Michael Howard was appointed Assistant Recorder in 1989 and Recorder in 1993.
General Information:
Michael Howard sits regularly as an arbitrator. He sits as an I.C.C. arbitrator and an L.C.I.A. arbitrator; he is a member of the standing Panel of Salvage Arbitrators appointed by the Council of Lloyd's; and in addition has received many appointments (since 1983) by parties, arbitrators or arbitral bodies as arbitrator, either sole or as one of a panel (in the latter case often, but not invariably, as umpire or chairman of arbitral tribunal).

Michael Howard has been in practice at the Bar since 1972, in Queen Elizabeth Building until 1989, and from 1989 onwards at 4 Essex Court. He advises and acts as advocate in commercial and shipping litigation.

He has been Leader of the Admiralty since 2000.

Scope of practice

The subject-matter of the cases in which he has acted as arbitrator reflects the range of subject-matter covered by Mr Howard's advocacy practice: appointments have included disputes concerning (among others):-

  • (iv)environmental issues;
  • (v)insurance and re-insurance;

  • (xi)supply and distributorship agreements;
  • (xii)technical disputes (for example ship construction, quantification of damages.
